Reverse osmosis has always been one of the competitive desalination technologies. Water-using equipment in the original seawater electronics industry must be pretreated before passing through RO film. Its purpose is to remove materials that may block the film or destroy its structure, such as oxidants. The treatment methods include agglutination sedimentation, filtration and adding inhibitors. After pretreatment, seawater is pumped from high pressure to membrane separation chamber. With the help of semi-permeable membrane, 90%-99% salts, 95%-99% organic matter and nearly 100% colloids such as bacteria and silica gel can be removed from seawater desalination equipment. The film usually consists of two parts, one is a spongy porous material, which allows salts and water to pass through and support the semi-permeable membrane, the other is a semi-permeable membrane with a thickness of only one thousandth of an inch, which can only allow water to pass through. The materials of permeable membranes for commercial applications can be divided into acetate fibers and polyurethane. Polyurethane materials usually have a long service life.
Reverse osmosis method consumes more electric energy, but it has the following advantages compared with multi-stage flash method: only consumes electric energy, does not need steam; equipment system is modular and easy to install; desalination plant has a shorter construction period and occupies a smaller area.
